Deviation From the Norm was formed in 2012 and disbanded before COVID-19 in 2019. We are effectively a third-year team, having resurrected Deviation in 2022. We strive to embody the FIRST Gracious Professionalism model while competing for awards and focusing on robot performance. This year, our team has 15 members committed to achieving our goals.

Team Specific Outreach

  • Several teams have asked for our assistance with various programming tasks. We have helped team #8813- The Winter Soldiers, with a broken gradle build that was causing them not to be able to push code into the robot. They have also requested our assistance with the new AprilTags API. We have also guided Robo Raptors with the VisionPortal and VisionProcessor APIs.

  • Over the summer various students from 6th-8th grade got the opportunity to build and design a robot to compete with their peers. Robotics members coached and mentored their teams .They learned skills such as programming, 3D modeling, building, and more!

  • During the annual Mississippi Valley Fair, a few members from the team went and advertised robotics and FIRST to the community. We set up a stand and allowed people to drive robots to experience the fun!

  • Set up and take down flags around neighborhoods/sidewalks for patriotic holidays/occasions

  • Our team picked up trash to prevent it from ending up in the Mississippi River and clean our city, we ended up collected 20 bags of trash at the end of the day. We are also helping design and install Rain Water Gardens throughout Davenport.

  • We (The Girls) went to a girls scouts camp at the Liberty Campground to teach young girls about robotics, STEM, and events along with ways to get involved. On top of this we helped them code robots along with building catapults.

  • At the beginning of the year all the freshman were allotted an hour to go through all the clubs the school provides, at this fair ourselves, radical, and no limit went to the fair together to talk about robotics and the benefit it makes along with the first community and the access we will get due to it being provided through the school

  • Our teammates Taylor Garrison and Will Rages go to Pleasant Valley Jr High to assist with mechanical designs and prototypes along with programming for the FIRST Lego League team Aquatic Alphas.

  • We teamed up with 25 female engineers at John Deere to host a SWE event in Pleasant Valley High Schools Library to allow young women to learn about future careers and opportunities in engineering and STEM. Our contribution was to make flyers and to send out invitations for those who might be interested.

  • We connected with FIRST members and potential mentors. The John Deere employees gave us a tour and helped us explore various future career paths John Deere provides.

  • An AEA PT who works at PV reached out to us about a project to help out a preschool student. Her communication device had no way to mount onto her stander, so we designed and built a mount for her!
